After having left D.F. in August, 2006, artist Ichiro Irie returns for his first solo exhibition in Mexico’s capital in over 4 years. The current body of work represents a culmination of his multifaceted artistic production in Los Angeles where he currently resides.

The title of the exhibit, There’s Nothing You Can Do That Can’t Be Done represents an attitude toward his studio practice which for Irie carries dual meanings. On one hand, it reflects a sense of resignation on his part to try and accomplish the impossible act of creating something that no one else could possibly do. On the other hand, the title also reflects a renewed sense of confidence and joissance for the artist who declares, “If someone else gets to do it, so can I.”

The title happens to also be the first words to the Beatles classic, “All You Need Is Love”.

This sense of liberation and experimentation manifests itself in painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, video and photo works that shift from playful to dead serious, reverent to transgressive, spontaneous to painstakingly labor intensive, utopic to apocalyptic, and small and intimate to big and epic at the drop of a hat.

For Irie, this current exhibition, more than any other he has produced, embodies his identity as an artist, and perhaps, the idea of identity itself in the beginning of the 21st Century.

Born in Tokyo and raised in Los Angeles, Ichiro Irie received his B.F.A. from University of California, Santa Barbara and his M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate University. In 2001, Irie went to Mexico City on a Fulbright fellowship, and has maintained an active relationship with the visual art community in Mexico. Irie has exhibited his work internationally in galleries and museums such as Kyubidou Gallery in Tokyo, Bank Gallery in Los Angeles, CSW Museum in Warsaw, and Museo Carrillo Gil, MUCA Roma, and Arte & Idea in Mexico City. He is also the founding member Cacahuates Japoneses, an artist collective whose work has been exhibited at Laboratorio Arte Alameda in Mexico City, Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, and the Brussels Biennial Off Program in Belgium. Irie currently lives and works in Los Angeles, and is an artist in residence at the 18th Street Arts Center.

All You Need Is Love.”
