Gretel Joffroy

With a palette of neutral colors recalling desert, sylvan, and urban hues all at once, Gretel Joffroy (b. 1979, Nogales, México) reveals an internal world in constant evolution. It was during her studies in the School of Visual Arts in New York that Joffroy began to define her unique style. Her thick brush-strokes create crowded, kinetic spaces of feminine forms, duplicated within oneiric, aggressive scenes, addressing Bataillean themes like human relationships and complexity, eroticism, life, death, and intimacy. Her own intuitive process has developed hand-in-hand with her studies and the influence of artists like Cecily Brown, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon, Cy Twombly, and Manet.

Joffroy's resolute dedication to painting has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. She has participated in group shows at The Proposition Gallery (NYC), Avalon (NYC), and Instituto de México a Paris (Paris). Joffroy has also had two individual exhibitions (Paul Gall, NYC, 2005 and ObjectNotFound, Monterrey, 2009). Yautepec Gallery is excited to host her first solo show in Mexico City in summer of 2010.

Currently, Gretel Joffroy lives and works in Monterrey, Mexico, and is represented by Yautepec Gallery and Galería GE.

Con una paleta de colores neutros, remitentes al desierto, al bosque y a los parajes urbanos, Gretel Joffroy, la artista originaria de Nogales, Sonora devela un mundo interno en eterna evolución. Al realizar sus estudios en la School of Visual Arts de Nueva York, fue desarrollando un estilo personal. Sus gruesas pinceladas nos muestra mujeres curvilíneas, objetos u otros seres que comparten espacios, y se duplican dentro de escenarios oníricos, agresivos abordando temas propios del filósofo George Bataille como las relaciones humanas y su complejidad, el erotismo, la vida y la muerte y la intimidad. El proceso intuitivo que Joffroy lleva a cabo siempre ha ido de la mano con sus estudios y la influencia de artistas como Cecily Brown, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon, Cy Twombly y Manet.

La valentía e intuición de Joffroy por apegarse a esta disciplina en tiempos post-conceptuales, es agradecida y valorada. Es por eso que ha participado en The Proposition Gallery, ha tenido dos exposiciones individuales (PaulGall, 2005, NY y ONF, 2009, MTY) y tendrá su primera exposición individual en la ciudad de México en verano del 2010 en la galería Yautepec.

Entre sus reconocimientos está premio Mexique Peinture del Institute du Mexique a Paris (Francia) en 2006.

Actualmente, Gretel Joffroy vive y trabaja en Monterrey, Nuevo León y es representada por Yautepec Galería y Galería GE.
