From its inception in January of 2008, YAUTEPEC became something of an enfant terrible within Mexico City’s art world, shaking up a largely staid gallery scene with a return to the youthful energy and experimentation of the capital’s DIY spaces of the 1990s.
During its tenure of an abandoned food preparation facility in the La Condesa neighborhood, a typical opening was more akin to a “fevered, packed party,” as Alexis Okeowo described that of Mexican artist Artemio for The Economist’s Intelligent Life publication.
Yet beyond the bacchanalia has always been the recognition that YAUTEPEC consistently produces unmissable monthly exhibitions of international scope, including artists from Mexico City, Monterrey, Berlin, Madrid, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City.
Having relocated in October 2009 to a storefront space in the up-and-coming San Rafael neighborhood, YAUTEPEC has initiated an important shift in focus. Recognizing a deficit of regional gallery support for a number of the most relevant emerging artists within Mexico, its two directors — Brett W Schultz (b. 1978, Chicago) and Daniela Elbahara (b. 1978, Monterrey) — have resolved in 2010 to invert the gallery’s once outward-looking agenda in order to work primarily with Mexico-based artists through a series of individual exhibitions.
Through an expansive web presence, pop-up shows in far-flung locales, and international art fairs, YAUTEPEC will continue to build an informed, enthusiastic network of young and established collectors to support what its directors consider to be the most talented emerging artists from Mexico.

Despues de sus inicios en Enero del 2008, YAUTEPEC se convirtió en el enfant terrible dentro del mundo del arte de la Ciudad de México, agitando en gran medida la escena de las galerías establecidas debido al renacimiento de la energía joven y experimental que distinguía a los espacios alternativos de los noventas.
Durante la residencia de la galería dentro de un antiguo centro de preparación de alimentos en la colonia Condesa, una inauguración típica como la del artista mexicano Artemio, se asemejaba más a una “acalorada fiesta a punto de reventar”, según la descripción de Alexis Okeowo de la publicación cultural Intelligent Life de The Economist.
Sin embargo — aunado a la espíritu festivo — YAUTEPEC es conocida por producir constantemente ineludibles exposiciones mensuales de reconocimiento internacional que incluyen artistas de la Ciudad de México, Monterrey, Berlin, Madrid, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami y Nueva York.
Al reubicarse a un espacio comercial en la ya popular colonia San Rafael, YAUTEPEC inicia un importante cambio en su enfoque. Reconociendo el déficit de galerías que apoyan a los artistas emergentes más relevantes dentro del país, los directores de YAUTEPEC — Brett W Schultz (b. 1978, Chicago) y Daniela Elbahara (b. 1978, Monterrey) — han resuelto que en el 2010 en lugar de trabajar con artistas extranjeros, apoyarán a artistas que residen en México produciendo una serie de muestras individuales a lo largo del año.
A través de una expansiva presencia en la web, exposiciones nomádicas y temporales en lugares remotos y ferias de arte internacionales, YAUTEPEC seguirá construyendo una red de coleccionistas jóvenes y establecidos para apoyar al los artistas emergentes más talentosos de México.
